A Solar Lantern lights up the village temple!

Priest with the Solar Lantern

Thanks to the generous donation of a Solar Lantern by Alexa and the efforts of The Restoring Force, the only temple in Munj Ka Pura, a village in Rajasthan, has been lit up. When the TRF team approached the village for installation of Solar Lanterns the people requested that the Temple also be lit up. As the monthly income of the villagers is not sufficient to meet their own needs, people did not have enough to contribute to the temple. The priest stays in the temple and lives on the offerings made by the villagers. The temple has an oil lamp which he lights in the morning but in the evening the Temple is completely dark. With the donation of the Solar Lamp the Temple is lit up all evening and the entire village is excited about it as they can now come in the evening and sing Bhajans on special occasions.

Bane Singh’s songs light up his life

Bane Singh and his family with the solar panel behind them

Bane Singh and his family with the solar panel behind them

Bane Singh has a lovely voice and sings devotional songs for all the major festivals like Diwali, Holi and Dusshera in his village Munj Ka Pura which lies on the border of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in India. He lives with his father Narwe Singh, mother Kaushalya Bai, wife Radha Bai and a son Nain Singh. The family’s monthly income like all others in this tiny village is a meager Rs. 500 (US $10). He cannot afford to send his son for studies with this income. He mainly spends time practicing songs and playing his harmonium while his father works in the fields. Out of devotion he does not charge any amount for the entertainment he provides to people during the festival time. With the generous donation of a Solar Lantern from Adrian and the efforts of The Restoring Force he can now work in the fields during daytime and practice his harmonium for a few hours in the evening, thereby increasing the family income and also send his son to school.

Kamal Singh can now dedicate more hours to his studies!

Kamal Singh with his new solar lantern!

Kamal Singh wants desperately to leave his village of Munj Ka Pura (located on the border of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in India) to get  a job to ease the burden of his mother and a father who is blind.  His mother, Geesabai, works in the fields from morning to night to make ends meet. Her monthly income is just 500 rupees (USD $10), which she uses to run the house and support her family. Against all odds she is determined to have her son educated and progress in life. There is a ray of hope in Kamal Singh’s life thanks to Mr. William and the efforts of The Restoring Force. Kamal Singh is currently studying in 9th grade and travels 22 kilometers to the nearest village for his higher education as Munj Ka Pura has only one primary school. With his new solar lantern he hopes to be able to dedicate more hours to his studies as he sees education as the only means by which he can move out of his village and get a job.  Thank you William for your generous support of Kamal and The Restoring Force.

Ramnabai can finally cook in a lit up kitchen!

Ramnabai with her new solar lantern!

Darkness gave way to light when a solar lantern entered the home of Ramnabai thanks to Cooler Planet and the efforts of The Restoring Force.  Prior to this donation, Ramnabai had lived her entire life without electricity. Each evening, she hurried home from the fields to prepare dinner before the sun set and darkness enveloped the traditional mud home she shares with her husband and two children.

With the light of the lantern she is pictured happily weilding her rolling pin. “I used to accidentally put wrong ingredients into the food because I could not see clearly. Sometimes insects would get into the food in the dark. It was terrible,” says Ramnabai. In addition to facilitating cooking, the lantern is easy to carry, helping the family see their way through the village’s mud paths and fields. Her husband says villagers were scared to go out in the dark because they could not see their way.

Ramnabai watches with pride as her children study by the light of the lantern, nursing the hope that they may not have to support themselves on a monthly income of just 500 rupees (US$ 10), the average in the village of Munj Ka Pura. With a secondary school more than 22 kilometres away, a hospital more than 5 kilometres away, a school teacher who comes only twice a month, and no irrigation for their fields, the solar lantern has now become a beacon of hope for the parents of the next generation.

A new lantern has helped Vandana improve her grades!

Vandana using her new solar lantern!

Vandana is studying in a local college towards her Bachelor of Arts degree. She is a good student, who puts in a lot of effort into her work. Her marks do not, however, always reflect her potential, because frequent power cuts make it difficult for her to study. In 12th grade, he was only able to score 70%, as her studies were often interrupted due to the lack of high quality light in her home.

Vandana, like many students living in rural villages, once struggled to complete her homework as her village has no electricity, but now that she has a solar lantern, she is able to spend more time on her studies, and is hopeful that her grades will improve.  TRF works with villages like Vandanas’ and provides families with low cost, high quality solar lamps, improving their health and their quality of life!

Thank you, Karen, for your gift of a solar lantern. It will allow the studious Vandana to study late into the night, and do better in her examination.
